Viking Drinking Horn with Algiz Rune and Brass Fittings, 400–500 ml

Authentic Design and Meticulous Craftsmanship

This magnificent Viking horn captures the eye with its robust appearance and detailed craftsmanship. Its surface is perfectly polished and glossy, with a prevailing dark, almost black colour that transitions to a beautiful natural grain in shades of brown and beige on the upper section. The Algiz protection rune is precisely carved into the horn and surrounded by a full circle featuring the runes of the Elder Futhark. The top rim is fitted with a solid brass band that features an intricate, embossed pattern. A unique element is the brass tip, which is artistically crafted in the shape of a stylised dragon head.

Why a Drinking Horn with a Protective Rune?

A true Viking drinking vessel is not just a replica; it's a piece of history that’s perfect for enlivening LARP events, historical re-enactments, or themed parties. Enjoy your favourite beverage like a true warrior. The horn can also serve as a stylish decorative item for a home bar or as an original gift for all lovers of Norse and Nordic mythology.

History and Symbolism: A Vessel of Divine Power

Drinking horns have a long and rich tradition in European history, dating back to antiquity. They were a popular ritual and festive object among the Celts, Germanic peoples, and especially the Norsemen. They were used for drinking beer and mead at feasts and celebrations, where they served for toasts and rituals.

Algiz – The Rune of Protection and Divine Connection

Algiz ($$ᛉ$$), also known as Eihwaz, is one of the most important runes of the Elder Futhark. Its symbolism is strongly linked to protection, spiritual defence, and connection to the gods. It is often interpreted as the symbol of an elk with antlers, defending its territory, or as a figure with arms raised to the sky in a plea or protective stance. In Norse tradition, it was believed that runes had not only a phonetic but also a magical power, and the Algiz rune served as a powerful protective amulet against evil and misfortune.

Caring for Your Drinking Horn

To ensure your horn serves you well for a long time and remains undamaged, it is necessary to care for it properly.

  • Before the first use and after each subsequent use, always wash it with lukewarm water and a soft brush.
  • The inside of the horn is treated with a food-safe resin lacquer to prevent the absorption of liquids.
  • It is advisable to wipe the inside dry after each use.
  • To maintain the shine and extend the life of the outer surface, it is recommended to occasionally treat the horn with beeswax.

Warning: As this is a natural product, it is important to avoid the following treatments, which could irreversibly damage the horn:

  • Never wash the horn in a dishwasher.
  • Never heat it in a microwave oven.
  • Do not use it for hot beverages, as this could damage the protective layer inside the horn.
  • Avoid liquids with an alcohol content above 20%. Ideal beverages are beer, mead, wine, water, and not overly acidic non-alcoholic drinks.

Remember that natural materials age. Over time, due to regular use and temperature changes, the horn may crack. However, proper care will significantly extend its lifespan.
