Chainmail Hauberk – 6mm Riveted Flat Rings Alternating with Solid Rings
The Perfect Choice for Battle and Costume
This long-sleeved, knee-length chainmail shirt (hauberk) is designed for maximum functionality. Slits at the front and back allow for free leg movement when walking or riding. Here is how you can use it:
- Living History and Re-enactment: With its authentic appearance and construction (flat rings, round rivets), this armour is suitable for portraying wealthier warriors of the High Middle Ages.
- LARP and Theatre: If you want your character to command respect, nothing beats the sound and shine of real steel.
- Comfort Tips: For the perfect look and protection, we strongly recommend wearing a padded gambeson underneath. It cushions impacts and prevents chafing. Also, cinch the armour at the waist with a leather belt – this transfers some of the weight from your shoulders to your hips, making it much more comfortable to wear.

A Glimpse into History
Did you know that making chainmail was an extremely expensive and time-consuming affair? In the Middle Ages, the value of a good hauberk was equivalent to several villages or a large herd of cattle. To speed up the process, armourers often used this exact method: alternating riveted rings with solid rings. The solid rings were punched from sheet metal, which was faster than making and riveting every single ring, whilst maintaining the armour's structural integrity.
Care and Maintenance
Since this armour is made of mild steel without a stainless finish, it requires your care to prevent rust.
- Storage: Never store the armour wet. Let it dry thoroughly in an airy place after every use.
- Oiling: Regularly treat the armour with a preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). An oil film protects the steel from atmospheric moisture.
- Transport: When transporting it in a bag, wrap it in an oiled cloth.
- What to avoid: Do not leave the armour lying on wet grass or in closed, damp containers. Rust is the number one enemy.
