What is Nalbinding?

Nalbinding (also spelled nålbinding, meaning "needle-binding" in Scandinavian languages) is an ancient textile technique where a single, short, flat needle is used to create a dense, elastic, and very strong fabric. Unlike knitting, which works with a row of live loops, here each stitch is individually knotted and looped through previous stitches. This makes the resulting fabric extremely durable and, if damaged, it will not unravel. It's the ideal technique for making warm and long-lasting items such as:

A Glimpse into History: A Needle Older Than Knitting

Nalbinding is one of the oldest textile techniques in existence, with archaeological finds dating back thousands of years. It was especially popular in Scandinavia during the Iron and Viking Ages. Many surviving textile fragments from this period, including the famous woollen socks from York, England (the former Viking settlement of Jorvik), were made using this method. The needles were made from bone, antler, wood, or, as in this case, horn. To own such a set of needles is to hold a tool with a thousand-year history in your hands.

Properties and Care of Horn

Horn is a natural material, and therefore every piece is an original. Your set of needles may vary slightly in colour and texture.
