Hand-Carved Viking Drinking Horn with Leaf Pattern

Historical Context and Feasting Use

Drinking horns boast a massive tradition in human history, stretching from antiquity through the Migration Period to the High Middle Ages. They held special significance primarily among Germanic and Scandinavian tribes during the Viking Age. Richly decorated horns were a sign of high social status and were used in solemn rituals known as symbel, where they circulated the feast hall and warriors drank from them to honour the gods, fallen ancestors, and future heroic deeds. Today, this piece will serve any reenactor fantastically in creating an authentic camp still life, while also acting as an original, eye-catching decoration for your home.

Guidelines for Horn Use and Maintenance

To ensure this beautiful natural product serves you for as long as possible, several important guidelines must be followed. The horn is treated on the inside with a food-safe resin varnish, ensuring completely safe use. Beverages such as beer, mead, wine, water, and non-acidic soft drinks are highly suitable for serving in this horn. Conversely, hot beverages and liquids with an alcohol content above 20% are completely unsuitable, as they could irreversibly damage both the inner protective layer and the horn itself.

Please remember that washing the product in a dishwasher or heating it in a microwave would lead to its absolute ruin. Extreme temperature fluctuations and aggressive chemicals harm natural materials. Before the first use, wash the horn under running lukewarm water. After each subsequent use, we recommend rinsing it by hand, letting it dry at room temperature. For a longer lifespan and protection against cracking, you can lightly treat the outside with genuine beeswax occasionally. Since it is a natural material that constantly breathes and shifts, minor surface cracks may appear over time, merely adding to the item's historical patina.
