A Tool of Two Uses: Stylus and Awl
This tool is crafted from polished genuine bone, giving it a unique texture and colour. Every piece is an original. Its design is ingeniously simple – it is spindle-shaped, thicker in the middle for a firm grip, and tapers to two functional points.
- Use as a Stylus: The thinner, sharper tip serves as a stylus. You can use it to write or draw on a wax tablet (a tabula cerata), which was the common 'notepad' in ancient Rome. This end is sharp enough to leave a clear mark in the wax.
- Use as an Awl: The other, slightly thicker and more robust end, is ideal as an awl. As shown in the photographs, it can easily pierce leather, for example, when preparing holes for sewing a belt or pouch. It is an indispensable tool for any historical crafting project.

Bone is a natural material that will last a very long time with a little care. As each piece is handcrafted from a natural material, its appearance (colour, texture) may vary slightly from the photos.
- Keep the tool dry. Clean it with a dry cloth after use.
- Never leave it soaking in water – it could crack or warp.
- Do not put it in a dishwasher or use harsh detergents.
- As bone is relatively brittle, protect the tool from drops onto hard surfaces and do not apply extreme lateral force (e.g., prying), as it could break.
