Crusader Tunic (Surcoat) Templar, Black with Red Cross, 100% Cotton
This **surcoat** is designed with both historical accuracy and modern comfort in mind. It is made from strong yet soft 100% cotton, which is ideal for long days at events—it's breathable, absorbs sweat, and maintains a comfortable temperature. The tunic features a straight cut, long sleeves, and extends to just below the knee. A simple V-neck makes it easy to pull on over your head. Its most striking feature is the large, bright red **cross pattée**, which is carefully stitched (appliquéd) not only on the chest but also on the back, ensuring visibility from all angles. Practical slits at the front and back are essential for free movement, combat, and horse riding.
Historical Context and Wear
Surcoats became popular in the 12th and 13th centuries as an outer garment worn over **chainmail or plate armour**. They served several purposes: they protected the armour from rain and dust, reduced heat from the sun, and, most importantly, served as identification. The colours and symbols (like the cross) clearly showed a knight's allegiance.
Although this tunic is often referred to as 'Templar', it is important to note the historical details. The **Knights Templar** typically wore a *white* surcoat with a red cross (symbolising purity and martyrdom). The **Knights Hospitaller** wore a *black* garment with a *white* cross. This black-and-red combination is therefore more of a universal symbol of a **Crusader warrior**, or could represent a sergeant or lay brother within the Templar order, and is extremely popular in **fantasy**, **LARP**, and **re-enactment** circles.
How to Use
This tunic is the ideal base layer for your costume:
- Re-enactment and Historical Events: Portray a Crusader soldier or a member of a knightly order.
