Men's Blue Gothic Costume With Tunic And Hood

Historical Background And Costume Usage

The historical inspiration for this highly practical garment is based on the fashion of the High and Late Gothic periods, roughly from the 14th and 15th centuries. During this period, practical upper tunics reaching approximately to the knees were worn by men across Western and Central Europe. These garments offered plenty of freedom of movement in their lower part, while the fabric at the waist was often elegantly gathered and tied so as not to hinder work. Wide sleeves added grandeur to the garment, and a useful lacing at the neck was a common feature. An indispensable part of the medieval wardrobe was the hood, here a classic medieval gugel with a typical elongated back tail (known as a liripipe), which safely protected the head and shoulders from the vagaries of the weather and cold. A similar ensemble was worn by wealthier townspeople, artists, and the lower nobility during their everyday activities. The entire garment is excellently tailored from 100% cotton and popular duvetyn, which is a very strong fabric resembling luxurious velvet that provides excellent thermal properties.

Please note your desired colour or colour combination in the comment field of your order. Always state (1) the swatch number, (2) the colour letter, and (3) the colour name (e.g. 03-A-yellow). If a fabric with a different composition is chosen, the price may change. Any potential price change will always be consulted with you in advance before processing the order.

Garment Maintenance And Care

To ensure this beautiful historical garment lasts as long as possible in perfect condition and the colours remain rich, we recommend washing it very gently. Details can be found in the cleaning and maintenance instructions. Hand washing or machine washing on a gentle cycle designed for cotton (at a maximum temperature of 30 °C) is ideal. Never use harsh chemical bleaches and do not dry the garment in a tumble dryer, as this could cause shrinkage and irreversible damage to the cotton fibres and the luxurious texture of the duvetyn. Let it air dry freely hung on a hanger. We strongly advise you that the leather belts, footwear, and any weapons shown in the photographs are not included in the delivery.

Recommended Medieval Accessories

To perfectly portray a medieval man from the 14th or 15th century, we highly recommend acquiring a sturdy and long leather belt for the tunic, on which you can easily hang a period leather pouch and a practical medieval dagger. Your costume will also be excellently and historically accurately complemented by our historical leather footwear.
