Medieval Brass Ave Maria Ring Brooch with Inscription, 13th Century

High Medieval Devotion and the Magical Significance of Inscriptions

This type of circular ring brooch (known as a fermail) is based on archaeological finds dating from the 13th to 14th century (approx. 1200–1300). During this period of the High Middle Ages, brooches featuring religious inscriptions were among the most popular personal ornaments across all social classes—from wealthy townsfolk to the nobility. The brooch is a precise hand-casting made of brass and bears the Latin inscription: "AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA IVAN" (translating to "Hail Mary, full of grace...", where the word IVAN likely denotes the name of the medieval craftsman or owner).

The text was not merely intended to declare the owner's piety, but in the medieval worldview, it also served an apotropaic, or protective, function. It was believed that holy words engraved or cast into metal protected the wearer from evil forces, illness, and misfortune while travelling. The brooch is very easy to use: pierce the gathered fabric of the garment with the pin, pass it through the ring, and by slightly rotating the frame, lock the pin securely against the brooch's edge.

Brass Care and Safety Guidelines

My friend, care for this brass casting with due respect so that it serves you for many years. Due to moisture and sweat, brass naturally develops a darker patina over time, which gives it an even more authentic appearance. If you prefer a radiant shine, we recommend occasionally polishing the brooch gently with a dry cotton cloth and a metal polishing paste. Be careful when fastening garments—the pin is designed to pass easily through woollen or linen fabrics, but careless handling could snag very delicate fabrics. Keep the item out of the reach of small children.

Recommended Accessories

With this beautiful Gothic ring brooch, we highly recommend getting a hand-woven woollen or linen tunic corresponding to the 13th or 14th century and a light woollen cloak. A leather belt with a brass buckle and strap end in a matching historical finish is also a great choice. You will thus achieve a complete and historically accurate outfit for your medieval reenactments.

Přezka je hodně masivní, takže spíš k úzkému opasku. Koupila jsem si je na podvazky a nakonec to s odřenými zády také půjde...
