Drinking from Horns in History
Drinking from horns is an ancient tradition that dates back thousands of years. Although we primarily associate it with the Vikings today, it was common among many peoples, including the Thracians, Celts, and Germanic tribes. In Viking society, the drinking horn was not just an ordinary vessel. It was a status symbol, used in ceremonial toasts, rituals, and was an integral part of social life in the mead halls. By holding this horn in your hand, you are connecting directly to a thousand-year-old tradition.
How to Care for Your Horn
As this is a natural product, it requires special care to ensure it serves you for a long time:
- Before the first use, wash the horn by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent.
- Always hand-wash only. Never put the horn in a dishwasher! The hot water and harsh detergents will irreparably destroy it.
- Never heat it in a microwave.
- The horn is intended exclusively for cold and lukewarm drinks (beer, mead, wine, water).
- Never pour hot drinks (coffee, tea, mulled wine) into it. The sudden temperature change could cause the horn to crack or damage the resin.
- It is not suitable for drinks with an alcohol content above 20% or for highly acidic beverages (e.g., juices or sodas).
- After each use, wash the horn immediately and let it dry thoroughly.
- To extend its life and shine, you can occasionally rub the outside of the horn with beeswax or a food-safe oil.
