Decorative Seax of Beagnoth, Limited Deluxe Edition (250 pcs)

The Thames Find: A Tribute to 9th Century Craftsmanship

The original of this seax, also known as the "Thames Scramasax," was found in the River Thames in London in 1857. It is one of the most famous examples of Anglo-Saxon weaponry and blacksmithing artistry. The inscription on the blade is unique because it contains the complete Futhark (runic alphabet) of 28 characters, followed by the personal name Beagnoth. This seax was not just a weapon but also a status symbol and possibly a magical or ritual object, as the presence of the entire alphabet might suggest.

Detailed Craftsmanship of the Limited Edition

This replica has been crafted with the utmost care to match the original in form and dimensions as closely as possible.

  • Blade: It is made from carbon steel with a blued (blackened) finish, giving it an authentic look and protecting it from corrosion. The blade features a narrow but deep fuller (Hohlkehle) and is unsharpened for safety.
  • Inscription: The runes and ornaments are meticulously engraved and filled with gold and silver colouring (simulating damascening), just like the historical original.
  • Handle: The wooden scales are adorned with intricate hand-carved knotwork and fastened to the tang with brass rivets.
  • Deluxe Sheath: The robust sheath made of brown cowhide has two belt loops and is decorated with four brass applications featuring a knotwork motif, distinguishing this limited edition from the standard version.
  • Accessories: The seax comes with a wooden wall display plaque for presentation and a numbered certificate of authenticity, confirming its place in the limited series of 250 pieces.

How to Care for Your Seax

Even though the blade is blued, it is still carbon steel, which is prone to rust. After every time you touch it (human sweat is corrosive), wipe the blade with a dry cloth and lightly oil it (e.g., with WD-40 or mineral oil). Keep the leather sheath dry and occasionally treat it with a leather care product. The wooden parts do not require special care, just protect them from extreme humidity or dryness.

⚠️ Classification: Class C Weapon

This product is a high-quality replica but is not designed for practical use, such as historical fencing (HEMA, SCA), cutting tests, or any form of contact combat. It is classified as Class C according to our Classification of Battle-Ready Weapons. The blade is unsharpened for safety. It serves primarily as a collector's item, a costume accessory (Cosplay, LARP), or a luxurious decoration.
