Historical Context and Evolution
Swords of this type, commonly known as bastard swords or hand-and-a-half swords, experienced their golden age during the 15th and 16th centuries. The elongated grip allowed for a devastating two-handed strike, while the relatively moderate blade length still permitted one-handed use in close quarters. A highly typical feature of the transition to Renaissance weaponry is the addition of protective side rings. These rings were added to the classic crossguard for a simple reason: fencers began placing their index finger over the quillon for better point control. The rings thus provided much-needed protection for this vulnerable finger against slipping enemy blades. In terms of Oakeshott's typology, the pommel closely resembles the popular Type T (often called a "scent-stopper"), which acted as an excellent counterweight and prevented the sword from slipping out of the hand.

Due to this threaded construction, we strongly advise you to regularly check the tightness of the pommel before and during every training session to prevent the hilt from loosening. When engaging in any contact fencing, always prioritise your safety and the safety of your sparring partners by wearing adequate protective gear, particularly a fencing mask, a padded gambeson, and heavy-duty gloves. You should never use this sword to strike hard objects (wood, stone), as this could cause irreversible damage to the blade.

Maintenance and Care
To ensure your weapon serves you well for many years, it requires regular care. The blade is made of carbon steel, which is susceptible to rust. After every training session, it is essential to wipe the blade free of sweat and moisture and coat it with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil. Treat the steel parts of the hilt in the same manner. We recommend occasionally treating the leather-wrapped grip and scabbard with a beeswax-based leather balsam so the natural material does not dry out or crack.
