Lorica Musculata – Ancient Muscle Cuirass with Brass Finish
Historical Context
The muscle cuirass originated in archaic Greece and was famously used by Spartan hoplites before being adopted by the Roman legions. In Rome, this style of armour was primarily a symbol of rank, worn by senior officers such as legates, tribunes, and even emperors. The anatomical sculpting of the chest and abdomen was intended to display the wearer's physical prowess and intimidate foes on the battlefield.
This set includes both the breastplate and backplate, featuring detailed muscle relief. The bottom edge is flared outwards, a historically accurate design feature that ensures mobility and allows the wearer to sit comfortably.
Construction and Fit
The armour is crafted from 20-gauge (approx. 1 mm) mild steel with a polished brass finish. This gives it the majestic look of bronze while utilizing the strength of steel. The plates are secured together with sturdy leather straps and brass buckles located at the shoulders and sides, allowing for an adjustable fit within the specified measurements.
Important Safety Note
Please be aware that due to the 20-gauge thickness, this is not battle-ready armour suitable for full-contact medieval combat (such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations). It is intended for costume use, LARP, and light stage combat. It will not withstand heavy blows from blunt steel weapons.
For a comfortable fit and to prevent chafing, we strongly recommend wearing a padded doublet, gambeson, or a Roman subarmalis underneath the cuirass.

Maintenance
As the core material is mild steel, regular maintenance is required to prevent rust. After each use, wipe the armour down with a dry cloth to remove any moisture or sweat. Apply a light coat of mineral oil or a specialised armour preservative to keep it looking pristine and corrosion-free. Store in a dry environment.
