The History and Symbolism of Interwoven Knots
The use of drinking horns is documented across many cultures of antiquity and the Middle Ages. They were a symbol of status and abundance and were often decorated with precious metals.
Fun Fact: The Symbolism of the Endless Knot
Interwoven patterns, known as Celtic knots, are characteristic of the early medieval art of the British Isles and Scandinavia. These designs, formed from a single, unbroken line that weaves through itself, have no beginning and no end. They symbolised infinity, eternity, the interconnectedness of life and spirit, and the cyclical nature of the world. The Vikings, who were in close contact with the cultures of the British Isles, adopted and further developed this artistic style.
How to Care for Your Drinking Horn
To ensure your horn serves you well for a long time, give it the proper care. The interior is sealed with a food-safe resin layer.
What (Not) to Put in Your Horn:
- SUITABLE: Cold and lukewarm drinks. You can enjoy beer, mead, wine, cider, or water. The horn is safe for beverages with up to 20% alcohol content.
- UNSUITABLE: Hot drinks (coffee, tea), spirits over 20% ABV, dishwashers, and microwaves. High temperatures could permanently damage both the horn and the internal resin layer.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Washing: Immediately after use, hand wash the horn under running lukewarm water.
- Drying: Dry it carefully with a soft cloth.
- Treatment: To prolong its life, we recommend occasionally rubbing the outside of the horn with a little beeswax.
