Viking Broken-Back Seax with Carved Wooden Handle and Scabbard

Historical Context and Blade Profile

Although every Viking chieftain was an absolute expert in handling swords, shields, spears, and axes, these long and heavy weapons were not always immediately within reach. Because of this, Norsemen almost always carried a large seax with them, suspended from their belt either in the front or the back so as not to interfere with other weaponry. In the event of a sudden attack, it was instantly ready for use and was often combined with other weapons in battle. This specific knife features the popular "broken-back" profile, where the straight spine initially rises slightly and then drops abruptly to the tip. In its basic form, this blade predates the famous Bowie knives by many centuries.

Craftsmanship and Materials

The mighty blade is forged from high-quality 1055 carbon steel, tempered to spring hardness, and given an attractive satin finish. The carbon content and careful heat treatment make this steel a highly stable material that is free from brittleness and exhibits tremendous impact resistance. Because the seax is designed primarily as a weapon, it is equipped with a subtle brass handguard that prevents fingers from slipping onto the edge and provides basic protection against opponents' weapons. Special attention has been paid to the hand-carved handle made of Malaysian Sal wood, which is decorated with an intricate relief knotwork pattern and elegantly capped with a brass pommel. The product comes complete with a robust, historically accurate brown leather scabbard featuring brass fittings, side lacing, and authentic leather suspension loops.

Safe Usage Guidelines and Maintenance

This bladed weapon is delivered with a sharply honed edge. We strongly warn you that for safety reasons, it is absolutely not intended for contact historical fencing (HEMA), stage combat, or person-versus-person dueling. It can be used for cutting tests (tameshigiri) on inanimate targets, always keeping the maximum safety of yourself and your surroundings in mind. Since the blade is made of carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust without proper care. After every use, touching with bare hands, or exposure to a humid environment, the blade must be thoroughly cleaned and preserved with a thin layer of gun oil. We recommend occasionally treating the wooden handle with linseed oil or beeswax, and applying a leather balm to the scabbard to maintain its flexibility and long-term durability.
