Functional Early Medieval Broken Back Seax With Hardwood Handle
History And Origin Of The Seax
Did you know that the famous Saxon tribes derived their very name from this characteristic knife? The seax played such a vital role in the daily lives of Germanic tribes from the 6th to the 12th century that an entire people was named after it. It was relatively cheap to manufacture, yet incredibly versatile and effective. In terms of weapon typology, this specific model is a classic broken-back seax, defined by a straight cutting edge and a convex back that slopes sharply down to the point. This design provided excellent forward-weighting for devastating chops, whilst still allowing for lethal thrusts, making the seax a feared close-quarters weapon and an indispensable wilderness tool.
Materials And Craftsmanship
This weapon is forged from highly resilient 1055 high carbon steel. Its chemical composition guarantees immense impact resistance and minimises the brittleness that often plagues harder, higher-carbon steels. Consequently, this steel is the absolute perfect choice for large chopping blades, machetes, and swords. The handle is hand-carved from exotic hardwood and secured with brass pins for maximum durability. The knife is supplied with a heavy-duty, historically authentic cowhide leather scabbard, complete with period-accurate strapping and solid brass buckles designed for horizontal or slightly angled belt wear.

Safety Guidelines And High Carbon Steel Care
Crucial Warning: The blade of this seax comes fully sharpened from the factory! While it is exceptional for practical use, such as cutting tests or campsite chores, for obvious safety reasons it is strictly unsuitable for contact fencing, HEMA, or human-to-human combat. Striking a person with this blade would cause fatal injuries. Please use it safely and only on inanimate targets. Furthermore, because the blade is made from high carbon steel (and is not stainless), you must clean it and apply a thin coat of gun oil after every use to prevent rusting. We also recommend occasionally treating the hardwood handle and the leather scabbard with natural beeswax.
Recommended Accessories
To keep the cutting edge in razor-sharp condition, we highly recommend purchasing a quality whetstone and a premium rust-preventative gun oil from our weapon maintenance category.
