Sharp Early Medieval Seax of Carbon Steel with Bone Handle

Usage and Knife Construction

The blade of this traditional knife is forged from 1070 carbon steel, which is characterized by high strength and excellent edge retention. Its surface is left in a rough forged state on the upper section, creating a wonderful contrast with the smoothly ground bevel. The handle is masterfully assembled from olive wood and genuine bone, separated by fine brass rings. At the end of the grip, there is a brass lanyard ring for optional attachment of a leather cord. The knife is supplied together with a hand-stitched leather sheath made of genuine cowhide, decorated with subtle tooling and equipped with a practical belt loop.

History and Weapon Typology

The seax (or scramasax) was an absolutely crucial piece of armament and equipment for men in Northern and Western Europe between the 5th and 11th centuries. This single-edged knife was so popular that, according to historical sources, it gave its name to the entire Saxon tribe. It served as a universally applicable tool for woodworking, skinning game, and food preparation in the camp. However, in an emergency or upon losing a primary sword or axe, it immediately transformed into a highly effective and lethal weapon for close-quarters combat within the shield wall.

Safety Guidelines and Maintenance

This product is supplied with a fully functional, sharp blade. For safety reasons, we must strongly warn you: This seax is under no circumstances intended for contact Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), stage combat, or LARP battles! Any use in man-to-man combat could result in a fatal injury. Since the blade is constructed from carbon steel (it is not stainless), it must be carefully cleaned, wiped completely dry, and treated with a thin layer of high-quality gun or natural oil after every use. Protect the handle, made of natural materials, from extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity to prevent the bone or wood from cracking. Regularly condition the leather sheath with beeswax or a leather balm.

Recommended Accessories

For this historical knife, we highly recommend purchasing a quality leather belt with a forged period buckle and a traditional linen tunic, which will make your early medieval costume absolutely flawless.

nedoporučuji. Nekvalitní po reklamaci mi přišel další a ještě v horší kvalitě. první koupě 16.leden, teprve dnes došel další a jak naštvaně popisuji ještě horší. Zítra volám opět prodejci a už si asi další nože neobjednám. Pozitivní je snad jen vstřícné jednání prodejce, ale proč nuž když je na výrobní vadu upozorním neprohlédnou a pošlou další s tou samou vadou????
