History and Symbolism of Drinking Horns and the Stag

Drinking Horns in History

The use of animal horns as drinking vessels has its roots deep in human history, across many cultures, from the Vikings, Celts, and Germanic tribes to the Scythians. They were valued for their natural shape, durability, and availability. They served not only for drinking at feasts and rituals but were also symbols of status, power, and abundance. Richly decorated horns could belong to chieftains and important warriors.

The Symbolism of the Stag

The stag is a revered animal in many cultures, often associated with strength, pride, masculinity, speed, and regeneration (due to the shedding and regrowth of antlers). In Celtic mythology, the stag was a sacred animal, a guide to the Otherworld, and a symbol of the forest and wild nature. For Germanic tribes, it symbolized nobility and was often depicted in their art. The stag engraving on your horn thus carries the legacy of these ancient meanings.

How to Care for Your Drinking Horn Properly

To keep your drinking horn beautiful and functional for a long time, please give it the proper care.

What Belongs in the Horn (and What Doesn't):

  • SUITABLE FOR: Cold and lukewarm beverages. You can enjoy beer, mead, wine, cider, water, or soft drinks. Recommended for drinks with an alcohol content of up to 20%.
  • NOT SUITABLE FOR:
    • Hot drinks (coffee, tea, mulled wine) – high temperatures can damage the natural horn material.
    • Beverages with an alcohol content over 20%.
    • Dishwasher cleaning – aggressive detergents and high temperatures would destroy the horn.
    • Do not place in the microwave or oven.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  1. Rinsing: Before first use and after each subsequent use, rinse the horn by hand under running, lukewarm water.
  2. Drying: After rinsing, dry the horn carefully with a soft cloth. Do not leave it wet for long.
  3. Treatment: For a longer lifespan and to maintain the beauty of the material, we recommend treating the inside and outside of the horn with a thin layer of natural beeswax (food-grade) after each use.
  4. Storage: Store the horn in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Please note: As this is a natural product, each horn is unique in colour, shape, and texture. Over time, the material may naturally age, and small cracks may appear, which rather adds to its rustic charm.
