The Story of the Knights Templar

After the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the path for pilgrims to the Holy Land remained dangerous. Around the year 1119, nine French knights led by Hugues de Payens took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and pledged to protect pilgrims. King Baldwin II of Jerusalem gave them a headquarters in a wing of his palace, which stood on the site of the former Temple of Solomon. From this came their name – The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, or Templars for short. From a small group, they soon became one of the most powerful and wealthy orders in Europe.

Typological Classification

The shape of this sword corresponds to the classic knightly sword of the High Middle Ages (12th–13th centuries), when the Templars were at the height of their power. According to the Oakeshott typology, it is a typical example of a Type XII, which was very popular among Crusader knights for its versatility in combat. The octagonal pommel is a known historical variant of this type.

Care and Safe Use

The stainless steel blade is virtually maintenance-free. The nickel-plated hilt should be kept dry and clean and occasionally polished with a soft cloth.

Important Notice: This is a decorative replica and a letter opener, not a weapon. Although it has a sharp point, it is not intended for combat, cutting, or any other practical use other than opening mail. Handle it responsibly and keep it out of the reach of children.
