Create Your Own Scale Armour
This set is the ideal foundation for your DIY project. You can use the scales to create a full torso cuirass, spaulders, or to reinforce your leather gambeson. Each scale features a stamped central ridge for increased strength and resistance to bending. Five pre-drilled holes (one large at the top, two pairs on the sides) allow for easy and secure riveting or sewing onto a leather or heavy textile backing.
A Glimpse into History: Protection of the Norse Warriors
Although we mainly associate Vikings with mail, archaeological finds have confirmed that the wealthiest and highest-ranking warriors also wore scale armour. The discovery of hundreds of scales just like these in Birka, Sweden, is clear proof. Scale armour offered better protection against stabs and especially arrows compared to mail, as arrowheads would often glance harmlessly off the smooth, overlapping scales. It was robust and prestigious protection reserved for the elite.
A Fascinating Historical Fact
One of the most famous finds of scale armour from Birka comes from grave Bj 735. It contained over 700 individual scales, which would have been enough for a complete cuirass. Such an armour represented immense wealth and clearly signaled that its owner was a chieftain or an exceptionally successful warrior.

Important Properties and Maintenance
Please remember that this is a semi-finished product for your crafting project. The scales are supplied lightly oiled and their surface is not polished. Any minor surface rust or scratches are a natural characteristic of this product and not a defect. Rust can be easily removed with steel wool or a metal cleaning eraser. After completing your armour, store it in a dry place and regularly treat it with a conservation oil to ensure it serves you for many seasons to come.
