Blackened Steel Hauberk, 9mm Alternating Riveted Round & Solid Flat Rings
1xAre you looking for armour that combines historical fidelity, high durability, and a fearsome dark aesthetic? This long-sleeved chainmail hauberk with a chemically blackened finish is the ideal choice for mercenaries, raiders, or dark paladins. The construction utilizes a historically documented and very strong method of alternating rows: one row consists of riveted round rings, and the next of solid (punched) flat rings. This gives you armour that can withstand the rigours of LARP and historical reenactment without sacrificing mobility. Become the wall against which your enemies' attacks shatter. Battlefield Construction: Strength in Every Ring
This hauberk is not just a costume prop, but functional armour. Its mesh is assembled using a system popular in the Middle Ages for its efficiency and durability. It features an alternating pattern of:
- Rows of Riveted Rings: Made from round wire and joined with dome head rivets. They ensure flexibility and a secure connection.
- Rows of Solid Flat Rings: These rings are punched from a single piece of sheet metal. They have no join to fail, which significantly increases the structural integrity of the entire armour.
The blackened finish not only gives the armour a distinct look but also offers mild protection against rust. However, bear in mind that this is a surface treatment that may wear off in high-friction areas (e.g., under the arms) over time, giving the maille an authentic battle-worn patina.
Comfort and Practical Use
The hauberk reaches approximately to the knees and features riding slits at the front and back, allowing for comfortable movement, running, and even horse riding. For maximum comfort and safety, follow these rules:
- Padding is Essential: Never wear chainmail directly on your body or over a thin tunic. A quality gambeson is a must-have accessory. It cushions the impact of blows that the rings don't stop and protects you from abrasion.
- Weight Distribution: Chainmail is heavy. To prevent shoulder fatigue, you must cinch it at the waist with a sturdy leather belt. This transfers some of the weight to your hips and relieves your spine.
Historical Context
The combination of riveted and solid (punched) rings was historically widespread, especially in the High Middle Ages. For armourers, this meant labour savings – only half the rings needed riveting, while the other half were punched from sheet metal. The result was armour that was cheaper to produce but just as resistant, if not more robust, than fully riveted pieces.
Armour Maintenance
Although the armour is blackened, it is made of mild steel, which is susceptible to rust. To keep it serving you well, give it some care:
- Storage: Never store the armour wet. Allow it to dry thoroughly in an airy place after every use.
- Preservation: Regularly treat the rings with oil (e.g., WD-40 or specific armour preservation oils).
- Transport: Try not to crush the armour too much during transport to avoid deforming the rings.
