The Heart and Protection of Your Shield
In the medieval period, the umbo (shield boss) was more than just a piece of metal. It was the most critical defensive component of a shield. A hole was cut in the centre of the shield board, which was then covered on the outside by the boss. This allowed the warrior's hand to safely grip a central handle. The domed shape of the boss was designed to cause both slashing and thrusting attacks to glance off to the sides, away from the vulnerable hand. Thanks to its 2 mm material thickness, this boss is also suitable for more demanding use in contact combat.
Easy Installation – A Guide for You
Mounting the shield boss is a straightforward process you can manage in a home workshop. Here’s a brief guide:
- Position the boss over the central hole in your shield board.
- Use the pre-drilled holes in the boss flange as a template to mark and drill corresponding holes in your shield.
- Insert the rivets from the front, passing through the boss and the shield board.
- On the back of the shield, place a washer over the end of each rivet.
- Using a hammer, carefully peen (flatten and spread) the end of each rivet over the washer. This will create a second head on the rivet, securing the boss firmly and safely in place.

Caring for Steel
The shield boss is supplied with a light coating of protective oil. Before use, wipe it clean with a dry cloth. As it is made from carbon steel, it is susceptible to rust. Therefore, keep it dry. After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry it thoroughly and apply a thin layer of mineral oil to ensure its long life and flawless appearance.
