Riveted Chainmail Hauberk, 9mm Flat Rings, Alternating Solid

Historical Accuracy and Construction

This hauberk is crafted from mild steel using a technique that was extremely popular in medieval armoury. The weave consists of alternating rows: one row of flat rings closed with round rivets (dome head), and the next row of solid, flat rings punched directly from sheet metal. This "half-riveted, half-solid" method significantly sped up production for medieval armourers without compromising the weave's resistance to slashing attacks. The internal ring diameter is 9 mm, offering an excellent balance between weight and protective density.

Usage and Comfort

This mail armour is designed primarily for historical re-enactment, HEMA, LARP, and film or theatre use. The flat rings lay closer to the body than round-wire variants, providing a better fit and arguably a more authentic look for certain periods. The knee-length cut and long sleeves ensure maximum coverage, while the split (vent) at the hem allows for unrestricted movement or horse riding.

Note: While this armour is battle-ready for re-enactment standards, for full-contact modern competitive buhurt (e.g., Battle of the Nations), we recommend checking specific league safety requirements, as mild steel has different properties compared to modern tempered spring steel.

To ensure comfort and impact absorption, it is absolutely essential to wear a quality gambeson (padded jack) underneath the mail. We also strongly recommend securing the hauberk with a sturdy leather belt at the waist. This helps distribute the weight from your shoulders to your hips, significantly reducing fatigue during extended wear.

Care and Maintenance

Chainmail made from mild steel is susceptible to rust if not cared for properly. Your hauberk is shipped heavily oiled to protect it during transit and storage. Before the first use, wipe off the excess oil with a rag you do not mind ruining.

  • Storage: Keep your armour in a dry place. Never leave it in a damp bag or lying on wet ground.
  • Cleaning: After each use, check for signs of rust. If found, remove it immediately with an abrasive pad or fine wire brush.
  • Preservation: Always re-oil the armour after cleaning or use (e.g., using WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil).

Safety Guidelines

Never use damaged armour. Broken or open rings can have sharp edges that might injure you or your opponent. Be careful when putting on or taking off the mail to avoid snagging hair—we recommend wearing a padded coif.

We recommend pairing this hauberk with a sturdy leather belt and a quality gambeson to complete your kit.
