Chainmail Shirt Hauberk – 10mm Riveted Round Ring – 16 Gauge Aluminium

Lightness you will appreciate immediately

The main advantage of this armour is the material used. Aluminium is significantly lighter than steel. While a steel hauberk could easily weigh over 10 kg, this shirt in size XL weighs only about 5.8 kg. This means less fatigue, better mobility, and a much more pleasant experience, whether you are running through the woods at a LARP event or standing guard at a historical market.

Construction: Riveted and Flat Rings

This shirt is not just simple knitting. It uses a historically proven technique of alternating rows:

  • First row: Round wire rings that are joined (riveted) with round rivets. This ensures a strong connection – the rings do not pull apart as easily as those that are merely butted together.
  • Second row: Flat, solid (punched) rings. These solid "washers" stiffen the structure and were historically used to speed up armour production.

The inner diameter of the rings is approximately 10 mm and they are made of wire corresponding to 16 gauge (approx. 1.6 mm). The finish is naturally silver/grey, typical for aluminium, which will acquire a slight patina over time.

Size Chart

The measurements below refer to the product when fully stretched. For the armour to fit you, your body measurements (including your gambeson!) must be smaller than the dimensions listed in the table. We recommend allowing a margin of at least 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) on the chest circumference for breathing room and movement.

When and how to wear this armour?

The Hauberk cut (a long shirt reaching roughly to the knees) was typical for most of the Middle Ages, from the Viking Age to the High Middle Ages. Thanks to the splits in the front and back, the armour will not hinder you when walking or riding a horse. Even though aluminium is light, you should always wear a gambeson under the chainmail. It increases your comfort, prevents bruising, and makes the costume look much more credible.

Important Usage Warning

Please bear in mind that this is a costume replica. Aluminium is a soft metal. This armour is not designed for full-contact combat, Buhurt (HMB), or clashes with heavy steel weapons. A strong blow from a steel sword could tear the rings. It is ideal for:

  • LARP (foam weapons)
  • Theatre and Film
  • Cosplay and costume events
  • Light scenic fencing (with caution)

Easy Maintenance

A great advantage of aluminium is that it does not rust like steel. You do not need to oil it constantly. If the armour gets muddy, simply rinse it in warm soapy water and let it dry. Store it best by hanging it on a sturdy hanger or folded so that no heavy objects lie on top of it, which could deform the rings.

A high-quality product from Lord Of Battles®.

Do you want to carry the weight even better? I recommend getting a sturdy leather belt (e.g., SKU 2202) to cinch the armour at the waist, transferring some of the weight from your shoulders to your hips.
