A Legacy of History
The Haubergeon – Armour of Professionals
From the 12th century onwards, the term Haubergeon (or "little hauberk") referred to a shorter mail shirt that typically extended to the waist or hips and featured long sleeves. It was lighter and offered more mobility than a full, knee-length hauberk, making it a favourite among knights and professional foot soldiers (men-at-arms). It was often worn as primary protection but later also served as a flexible base layer under emerging plate components like chest plates or brigandines.
Advantages of Material and Construction
Uncompromising Protection and Comfort
This armour is the result of combining historically proven methods with a modern understanding of user comfort.
- Strength of Riveted & Solid Rings: Every other flat ring is securely dome-riveted, while the alternating rings are solid, stamped from steel. This method ensures the mail will not fail even under powerful blows, unlike cheaper butted mail.
- Padded Collar and Cuffs: This feature significantly enhances comfort. The soft yet sturdy collar protects the neck from chafing by the mail and a helmet. Likewise, the cuffs protect the wrists and facilitate the wearing of plate gauntlets.
- Flat Rings: These offer a denser and flatter surface than round-wire rings, which distributes the force of a blow more effectively and increases protection against piercing attacks.
- Full Arm Protection: The long sleeves ensure that your arms, one of the most common targets in combat, are fully protected.
A Glimpse Into History
Did you know that the weight of mail armour was a key tactical factor? A warrior in full mail had to be in excellent physical condition. A haubergeon like this could weigh between 8 to 12 kg (18-26 lbs). Wearing such a weight all day and fighting in it required immense strength and endurance, which separated professional soldiers from common levies.
Care and Maintenance
To ensure your armour serves you faithfully for many battles to come, give it the proper care it deserves.
- Rust Prevention: Keep the steel rings dry and regularly treat them with a preservative oil (e.g., WD-40, gun oil).
- After Every Use: Thoroughly dry the armour, removing sweat and moisture, and apply a fresh coat of oil.
- Fabric Parts: The collar and cuffs can be wiped with a damp cloth if they become soiled. Avoid soaking them completely.
- Storage: Use a wide, padded hanger or a mannequin to store your haubergeon. This distributes the weight evenly and prevents strain on the shoulder seams.
