Dark Brown Viking Leather Boots Huskarl With Toggle Fastening
Historical Context And Proper Footwear Adjustment
Housecarls (Huskarls) were elite professional bodyguards of Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon kings in the Early Middle Ages. Their equipment had to be reliable and exceptionally functional. This model of early medieval boots features a highly specific fastening system. The part of the boot above the ankle serves primarily a design function. The halves of the shin upper do not have to close completely against each other, and the resulting wedge-shaped opening is deliberately unlined with a tongue. This is not a defect but a natural characteristic of the period cut. You can easily fill any gap with thick woollen socks or historical leg wraps. If the boot is too tight or loose across your instep or shin, simply loosen the knots on the leather straps leading to the toggles (you can use a nail or an awl to help) and individually adjust their length exactly to your leg.

Leather Care And Safety Warnings
Regular care is essential to maintain the leather's durability. The boots are treated with a beeswax balm during production. Regularly remove dried mud and grease them with a high-quality leather balm or cobbler's oil. This softens and waterproofs the leather. With any coloured surface finishes, keep in mind that under high stress, minor cracks may form over time, which is a natural characteristic of finished leather. If rain catches you on an expedition, stuff the footwear with old newspaper and let it dry very slowly at room temperature. Never dry the boots on a radiator, too close to a fire, or in harsh, direct sunlight! Rapid drying would irreversibly damage the leather, causing it to crack.
Recommended Accessories
To achieve an absolutely perfect period look and prevent blisters, we highly recommend purchasing medieval linen trousers and traditional woollen leg wraps (puttees) to go with these boots, reinforcing your calf and elegantly covering the top edge of the footwear.
