The lamellar armour that is made from these lamellar plates is manufactured in such a way that the plates overlap. The typical pattern consists of horizontal rows of lamellae tied together. Such lamellar armour offers excellent protection and limits the mobility of the wearer less than scale armour. Some of the most famous warriors in medieval history used lamellar armour, such as the Byzantine cataphracts. A cataphract was a heavily armoured horseman of the ancient and early medieval cavalry, used mainly in Iranian, late Roman and Byzantine armies. Lamellar armour was also common among Mongols and Japanese samurai.
