Napoleonic Infantry Sabre "Briquet" – Marto Toledo

Short but Famous: The "Fire Steel" Sabre

This sabre is not just a piece of metal; it is a piece of history. Originally introduced around 1780, it became an iconic weapon of the French Revolution and the subsequent Napoleonic campaigns. It was carried by drummers, standard-bearers, artillerymen, but above all by elite grenadiers and members of the Imperial Guard.

You might wonder why it is called a "Briquet" (French for "fire steel" or "lighter"). This somewhat mocking nickname was given to it by cavalrymen. The shape of the hilt reminded them of the steel fire strikers used at the time, and compared to their long cavalry sabres, this infantry weapon seemed diminutive. Despite the mockery, it was extremely useful—not only as a sidearm for close-quarters combat when the musket failed but also as a practical tool for cutting brushwood when setting up camp.

Detailed Craftsmanship from Toledo

The Marto brand is a guarantee of quality, and this replica confirms it. This is the "De Luxe" version, which stands out for its precise workmanship.

  • Hilt: It is cast from Zamak (a strong alloy of zinc, aluminium, magnesium, and copper), which is finished to faithfully imitate polished brass. The grip is typically ribbed for a firm hold and protected by a simple D-guard (knuckle bow).
  • Blade: The slightly curved blade is made of high-quality AISI 440 stainless steel. It is tempered, giving it hardness and a high polish that looks truly spectacular on a wall. The steel is resistant to corrosion, so maintenance is minimal.
  • Scabbard: Included is an elegant black scabbard (leather imitation) fitted with brass-coloured hardware (throat and chape), which perfectly matches the hilt of the weapon.

Intended Use and Safety

It is important to remember that this is strictly a decorative item.

  • Suitable Use: As a wall decoration, part of a costume for ceremonial guards, a theatre prop (non-contact), or a collector's artifact.
  • Restrictions: This sabre is not intended for fencing, cutting, or combat practice. While the stainless steel blade is hard, it is more brittle than carbon steel and could snap upon impact. The tang construction is not designed for shock absorption.
  • Care Instructions: Thanks to the stainless steel blade, you don't need to worry about frequent oiling. Simply wipe it occasionally with a soft cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. Clean the "brass" parts of the hilt only with a dry cloth; do not use aggressive metal polishes to avoid damaging the finish.
