Rondel Dagger with Wooden Grip – 15th Century
Construction and Appearance
The dominant features of this dagger are the two discs (rondels) – one forming the guard and the other the pommel. This is where its name comes from. These discs are decorated with fine notches around the circumference. The grip is made of dark hard wood, ensuring a firm hold, and is reinforced near the guard with a metal ferrule featuring a decorative edge. The blade is slender, stiff, and tapers to a sharp point, which is typical for weapons designed to penetrate mail or gaps in plate armour.
The package includes a leather sheath with a belt loop. Please note that the shade of the leather and the finish of the sheath may vary from piece to piece depending on the current production batch.
Historical Context: A Weapon for Knights and Merchants
The Rondel dagger was one of the most widespread daggers in Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries. Its design had a clear purpose: the circular guard allowed the warrior to exert enormous pressure during a thrust without their hand slipping onto the blade, while also protecting the hand from enemy blows. It was often called the "dagger of mercy" (misericorde) because it was used to deliver the final blow to a fallen opponent. However, it was not only the domain of soldiers; merchants and craftsmen also wore it as a status symbol and a means of self-defence.

Care Instructions
The blade is made of carbon steel, which is prone to corrosion. To keep your dagger looking great for a long time:
- Regularly preserve the blade with oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
- Do not store the dagger in the leather sheath for long periods. Leather absorbs moisture from the air and contains tannins that can cause the steel to rust.
- Any surface rust can be easily removed by gentle polishing.
