Italo-Corinthian Helmet Praetorian with Bronze Finish, 18 Gauge Steel
A Symbol of Command
This helmet style, also known as the Apulo-Corinthian helmet, represents a fascinating evolution in military history. Unlike the original Greek Corinthian helmet that covered the entire face, this Italian variant was worn on the top of the head like a cap. The eye slits and nose guard became stylized, decorative embossing on the forehead—a "pseudo-visor." This design was favoured by Etruscans, Samnites, and early Roman Republican officers because it did not obstruct vision or hearing, which was crucial for leadership on the chaotic battlefield.
Construction & Features
The helmet is constructed from mild steel with a thickness of approximately 1.3 mm (18 gauge). To achieve its historical look, the steel is treated with a specialized Antique Bronze Finish. This gives you the visual appeal of an ancient artifact with the structural integrity of steel.
For your comfort, the helmet comes fitted with an adjustable leather liner (suspension system). It also features a sturdy leather chin strap with a buckle to keep the helmet securely in place during action.
Care Instructions
Although the finish mimics bronze, remember that the core material is steel, which is susceptible to rust if neglected.
- Store the helmet in a dry environment.
- Wipe the inside dry after wearing it to remove any sweat or moisture.
- Apply a light coat of oil (like mineral oil or WD-40) to any exposed metal parts or scratches to prevent corrosion.
Suggested Accessories
To ensure the best fit and maximum comfort, I strongly recommend wearing a padded arming cap underneath this helmet. It provides cushioning, absorbs sweat, and helps the helmet sit better on your head.
