Medieval Braies – 12th–13th Century Underwear
1xDo you want your historical costume to be authentic from the first layer to the last? Then you must start with what remains unseen but is crucial for your comfort. Braies (from Latin braccae) are the absolute foundation of a medieval man's wardrobe. These voluminous drawers are gathered at the waist and form the necessary base layer under separate hose (chausses). Without them, your costume of a knight, townsman, or craftsman from the 12th and 13th centuries would simply not be complete. Further product information ...
Medieval Braies – 12th–13th Century Underwear
From Barbarian Trousers to Undergarments
Originally, this cut evolved from the loose trousers worn by Celts and Germanic tribes. Over time in the Middle Ages, they shortened and transitioned into the role of underwear. These braies feature a cut typical of the High Middle Ages – they are intentionally very wide to allow for gathering at the waist and unrestricted movement. They typically reach below the knee.
Construction and Comfort
The braies are made of 100% cotton (with a linen-like texture), which is breathable, absorbent, and comfortable against the skin. The waist features a drawstring channel with a sturdy cord, allowing you to cinch the garment tight to fit your body. The enormous waist width (approx. 184 cm / 72 inches) is not a mistake but a historical feature – the fabric gathers to create padding and volume that prevents the outer wool hose from chafing your skin.
