Are you fascinated by the history of Imperial Russia and the pivotal moments of military tactics? This replica of the Dragoon Shashka Pattern 1881 (M1881) represents a unique blend of wild Caucasian tradition and European military discipline. While Cossacks traditionally preferred guardless shashkas for their lightning-fast draw, the regular Russian army (Dragoons) required hand protection for their troopers. The result of General Gorlov's reforms was this elegant weapon – a saber with the light and agile blade of a shashka, supplemented by a brass knuckle bow. Whether you are a collector, a re-enactor, or an enthusiast of the 19th century, this model places a piece of history in your hand from a time when cavalry still ruled the battlefields. Russian Dragoon Shashka M1881 – Imperial Cavalry Saber

A Symbiosis of East and West

The original Shashka (from the Circassian "sashkhwa" – long knife) was the weapon of Caucasian mountain tribes. The Russian army quickly recognized its qualities and adopted it in 1881 as the standard weapon for most cavalry, replacing older and heavier saber models. This replica faithfully reproduces the appearance of the Dragoon model. The grip is made of wood with typical oblique grooves, ensuring a firm hold even with a sweaty palm or while wearing gloves. Unlike the Cossack versions, this model features a brass guard (knuckle bow), which protects the fencer's fingers from strikes. The end of the guard also features the characteristic eyelet for a wrist strap (sword knot).

Important Note on Usage

We want to be completely transparent with you. The blade of this Shashka is made of flexible EN45 spring steel; it is rolled (not forged), professionally hardened, and tempered. Both the materials used and the craftsmanship would theoretically allow for practical use in fencing. However, due to the impossibility of processing remote warranty claims with the Indian manufacturer (Deepeka), we offer this weapon strictly as a decorative item. This means that whatever you do with the Shashka (fencing, cutting tests) is done entirely at your own risk and without the possibility of claiming a warranty for any damage caused by such use. Officially, the weapon is intended as:

  • A collector's piece for display or wall mounting.
  • A costume accessory for re-enactment (Imperial Russia era, WWI, Russian Civil War).
  • A prop for theater or film.

The package includes a wooden scabbard covered in black leather (or leatherette) and reinforced with brass fittings – a throat and a chape. The throat features a ring for a baldric.

Care and Maintenance

Although this is a replica, the EN45 steel requires care to prevent corrosion:

  • Oil the blade regularly (e.g., with Ballistol or WD40), especially after touching it with bare hands.
  • You can polish the brass parts (guard, scabbard fittings) with a metal polish if you want to maintain the high shine typical of parade weapons.
  • Do not expose the weapon to moisture for long periods.
