Medieval Leather Belt Pouch with Antler Toggle, 15th Century

Historical Context and Practical Application

In the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, when clothing did not yet feature sewn-in pockets, belt bags and pouches were an absolute necessity for both men and women. This specific shape with heavy pleating and a sturdy back panel extending into a carrying loop is typical of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Pouches were used to store coins, flint and steel, or small personal items. Today, you can easily use it to discreetly carry your keys, mobile phone, or wallet without compromising the historical accuracy of your outfit.

The pouch is worn suspended from a belt. The wide loop, which is an extension of the bag's back panel, simply slides onto a leather belt. The closure is designed in a historically documented and highly practical manner: a leather drawstring is cinched and secured over a button made of real antler. This solution keeps the pouch reliably closed while allowing for quick, one-handed opening.

Leather Care and Safety Warnings

To ensure your pouch remains in perfect condition for as long as possible, proper leather care is essential. Leather is a natural material that develops a unique patina over time and with use. Occasionally treat the surface of the pouch with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in the rain, let the pouch dry slowly at room temperature. Never dry it in direct sunlight, on a radiator, or near an open flame, as the leather could harden and crack. Avoid washing in a washing machine and drying in a tumble dryer.

Do not place sharp objects without a cover (such as knives without a sheath) into the pouch, as they could cut through the soft pleated leather. Please note that the product is handcrafted from genuine leather; slight variations in colour and surface texture are natural properties of the material, making each piece unique.
