Early Medieval Leather Belt Pouch with Embossing and Celtic Toggle

Historical Context and Thoughtful Design

In the Early Middle Ages, the era in which the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table are set, sewn-in pockets were an unknown luxury. All survival necessities were carried in bags and pouches suspended from the belt. According to surviving sources, this specific type of pleated pouch was widely used in the South Wales region. The construction brilliantly combines the advantages of a rigid bag and a variable drawstring pouch. While the back panel and flap are made of thick cowhide that perfectly holds its shape and protects the contents, the sides made of softer leather can expand and adapt to the volume of carried coins, dice, or modern trinkets. The lower part of the flap is decorated with an impressed pattern resembling a woven basket, which was a popular way to demonstrate the craftsman's skill and the owner's status.

Practical Use and Secure Fastening

The pouch is primarily designed to be worn securely on a belt. On its back, there is a wide and sturdy leather loop through which you can easily pass a belt up to 8 cm (approx. 3.15 inches) wide. The closure is handled in a very period-accurate and secure manner. First, you tighten the inner space using leather drawstrings, thereby closing the pouch, and then you pull the rigid flap over it. For perfect security, a heavy, decorated Celtic toggle attached to a leather strap is simply passed through a firmly riveted loop on the front of the pouch. This mechanism will not yield even during running or a sword fight.

How to Properly Care for Your Pouch

Natural leather is exceptionally durable, but it requires regular nourishment to maintain its great properties and prevent cracking. We recommend occasionally and gently treating the rigid flap with embossing using a high-quality leather balm or beeswax. The softer, pleated sides should be greased only very lightly so they do not lose their pliability. If it rains on your expedition and the pouch gets wet, always let it dry very slowly at normal room temperature. Never dry leather near a radiant open fire, in direct sunlight, or on a hot radiator – this would cause irreversible hardening. Avoid chemical cleaners, and the product definitely does not belong in a washing machine.

Please note: Because this is a handcrafted natural material, slight nuances in colour shade and surface texture are completely natural. These subtle imperfections make each pouch a unique original and do not reduce its practical value.

To complement this richly decorated pouch, we highly recommend purchasing a sturdy early medieval leather belt from our range, on which it will stand out perfectly.
