Early Medieval Embossed Leather Belt Pouch Norman
Historical Context and How to Wear It
In the Early Middle Ages and the Viking Age, pockets sewn into garments were not a common feature. All necessities, such as tinder and firesteels, looted coins, medicinal herbs, or small personal items, were carried suspended at the waist in similar leather pouches. This pouch's design reflects the Norman and Nordic style of the 9th century. It is constructed from sturdy front and back panels, which are masterfully bound at the edges with a leather thong to soft side gussets. Fitting it is very simple – the pouch is threaded directly onto the belt using the massive rear loop. This loop transitions seamlessly into the front closure flap. This flap is then securely fastened by passing a leather string through it and tying it off on the front, ensuring you won't lose anything from your pouch in the heat of battle. The front panel of the leather is decorated with subtly embossed circular motifs containing a cross, which refers to typical solar or religious symbols of the Early Middle Ages.
Leather Product Care
Since the pouch is hand-crafted from genuine natural hide, it may show slight variations in colour and surface texture. These minor imperfections are a natural characteristic of the material, making every single crafted piece completely unique. To keep the leather in perfect condition, preserve its suppleness, and protect it from moisture, we highly recommend occasionally treating the surface with a high-quality leather balsam containing beeswax. If you get caught in the rain at an event and the pouch gets soaked, always let it dry slowly at room temperature. Never dry the leather near an open fire or directly on a radiator, as this would cause it to irreversibly harden, shrink, and crack.
For the perfect overall look of your historical attire, we recommend pairing this pouch with a period-correct leather belt featuring a hand-forged buckle, upon which this accessory will stand out brilliantly.
