The dominant feature of this sword is the handle (tsuka). It is covered with genuine ray skin and wrapped in dark blue cotton in the Katate-maki style. This "battle wrap" is specific in that the cord crosses over less frequently, allowing for a firmer grip, especially when used single-handedly. Hidden beneath the wrap are golden ornaments (menuki) in the shape of newts, which give the sword its name. The look is completed by a black wooden scabbard lacquered in the Kuroishime style – a matte finish with glossy speckles that is resistant to fingerprints.

Material and Construction

The shinogi-zukuri style blade is hand-forged from 1045 carbon steel. Although a basic steel, the precise craftsmanship and long tang (nakago) secured by two pegs ensure the sword is sturdy and fully dismountable. The temper line (hamon) is created by wire brushing for an authentic appearance. The sword comes with a protective cloth bag and a collector's box.
