As Shirasaya refers to a special sword mount, which was formerly used for the gentle keeping the blade. Especially in times of peace, the blades were kept in it perfectly protected. The unpainted Magnolia wood absorbs the moisture inside the sheath, leading them to the outside and thus protects the blade from rust. ManyAre you looking for a knife that honours old traditions while maintaining an inconspicuous, almost Zen-like appearance? The Shira-Saya O-Tanto by John Lee is an exceptional piece. This is not a standard small tanto, but an O-Tanto (large tanto) variant, which commands respect with its length. "Shira-saya" (white scabbard) originally served only to store the blade, allowing the wood to absorb moisture and protect the steel. However, in the 19th century, it became popular as a way to carry a weapon discreetly despite the Imperial ban. This model faithfully replicates this historical style – at first glance, it looks like a simple wooden stick or baton, but inside it hides a lethal edge. Shirasaya were provided with a "Sayagaki", an inscription, which gave information on Smith, Origin and classification. On the streets of Japan, the inconspicuous outfit was no handle and guard, especially in the late 19th Century use. At the time of the emperor performing Samurai swords banned. The Shirasaya mount, which saw a wooden sword and wooden stick was very similar, a clever way to wear the sword still unnoticed. Further product information ...

John Lee Shira-Saya O-Tanto – The Concealed Guardian

Natural Beauty and Functional Design

The entire mounting is made of unlacquered magnolia wood. This wood is prized for its ability to "breathe," protecting the blade from rust. The natural grain of the wood stands out on the scabbard (saya) and handle (tsuka), complemented by the traditional black sayagaki inscription, which historically provided information about the sword's origin. The absence of a guard (tsuba) and handle wrapping gives the weapon a clean, uninterrupted line.

Steel and Craftsmanship

Hidden inside the wooden case is a hand-forged blade made of 1045 carbon steel in the shinogi-zukuri style. The blade features a groove (bo-hi), which lightens it and adds an elegant look. The temper line (hamon) is created by cross-grinding for an authentic visual effect. A brass collar (habaki) ensures the blade sits firmly in the scabbard.
