Spanish Cup-Hilt Rapier "Tiziano" from Toledo
Elegance and Functionality of the Spanish School
This type of weapon, known as a taza (Spanish for cup/bowl), represents the pinnacle of civilian sword development. The dominant feature is the deep steel cup, which historically perfectly protected the fencer's hand from the opponent's blade point. On the Tiziano model, this cup is adorned with fine, detailed etching featuring floral and geometric motifs and medallions, giving it a luxurious appearance. The long, straight quillons and the knuckle bow protecting the fingers are typical features of rapiers of that era. The grip is metallic, segmented with a ring and grooving, ensuring a firm hold.
Heart of Toledo Steel
The blade is made of high-quality carbon steel. This is a material historically used for real weapons and (unlike stainless steel) requires a little care from you, for which it will reward you with an authentic look. The blade is slender, long, and straight, exactly as required by the Spanish school of fencing. You will find engraving on the blade in the ricasso area (the blunt part near the guard), which underscores the weapon's artisanal origin.
Care for Carbon Steel
Since the blade is not made of stainless steel, it is prone to rust if exposed to moisture. To keep the rapier looking beautiful, I recommend wiping the blade regularly (and always after touching it with bare hands) with a cloth and using preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil). You can clean the cup and hilt with a soft dry cloth to make the decoration stand out.
Safety Warning
Although the rapier is made of quality materials in Toledo, it is a decorative replica. The handle construction (tang) and blade heat treatment are not designed for the impact of real combat. The rapier is unsuitable for stage combat, HEMA, or other contact activities. There is a risk of blade breakage and injury. It serves exclusively as an ornament or costume accessory where no contact with other weapons occurs.
