German Point-Tied Plate Arms, 1460–1500

1x

Are you looking for authentic armor that offers both protection and exceptional freedom of movement? These German-style plate arms, inspired by designs from the late 15th century, are exactly what you need. Unlike their Italian contemporaries who favoured fully enclosed tubular arm harness, German armourers often prioritized pragmatic flexibility. These arms are lightweight, modular, and thanks to their unique point-tied system, they adapt perfectly to your movements. Whether you are gearing up for LARP, historical reenactment, or a stage performance, this harness gives you that distinct Gothic mercenary look without weighing you down. You will also appreciate the ease of maintenance and the ability to make quick repairs in the field. Further product information ...

German Point-Tied Plate Arms, 1460–1500

Historical Design and Construction

It is interesting to note the tendency of Germans, even in the very late 15th century, to use "half-pieces" instead of the tubular arms more commonly found in the Milanese style. These arms are not enclosed on the inner side, which significantly reduces weight and improves ventilation—a feature you will definitely appreciate during a long day of fighting or reenacting.

The individual parts (rerebrace, couter/elbow cop, and vambrace) are connected to each other by leather laces, historically known as "points." This construction method allows you to:

  • Adjust the fit: The holes in the leather points allow you to slightly adjust the height of the pieces so the elbow cop sits exactly where it should.
  • Move freely: The flexible connection provides better articulation than rigid riveting.
  • Repair easily: A broken leather lace can be replaced in seconds, whereas fixing a broken rivet requires tools and a workshop.

The armor is secured to your arm using sturdy leather straps and buckles. At the top, there is a leather tab intended for pointing (tying) the armor to your gambeson or arming doublet. For the best comfort and proper function, we recommend using this product in combination with our Arming Jack (SKU: MH-CL0800).

Important Usage Warning

Note: Although these arms are made of 1.2 mm steel, this is not protective armor suitable for full-contact heavy combat such as Buhurt, Battle of the Nations (HMB), or similar extreme sports. The material thickness and open construction are ideal for LARP, film, theatre, and standard reenactment, but not for withstanding full-force blows from heavy polearms or maces. For comfortable wear and to prevent bruising, always wear a suitable padded layer (gambeson/arming jack) underneath.

Maintenance and Care

Since the product is made of mild steel (not stainless), it is susceptible to surface rust. To keep your armor looking its best:

  • Store it in a dry environment.
  • The steel may be untreated or slightly oily upon arrival; wipe it down before the first use.
  • Regularly protect the surface with mineral oil (e.g., WD-40) or synthetic armor oil/wax.
