German Hunting Saber, 16th and 17th cen., Sale

1x

This elegant weapon is the replica of a sabre used by deer hunters in Germany. The original weapon is cataloged as number A716 in the Wallace Collection in London. The original sabre is inscribed with the number "1658" but its date is approximately a century earlier. This imposing sabre was used during parforce hunts for one purpose only. After the dog pack had put the hart at bay, a hunter cut the tendons in the hart's back legs to keep it from escaping. This curved blade cut the tendons more cleanly than a heavy sword would have. There is even a special verb in German for cutting a hart's tendons: "hessen." The most important member of the hunting party would then kill the prey. This well-balanced, well-tempered saber comes with a scabbard and will make a worthy addition to any collection. More information...

German Hunting Saber, 16th and 17th century

Please note: This is just an ornamental item, not intended for real use!

This German hunting sabre is an extremely elegant, finely balanced medieval weapon. It has a short, wooden grip. The comparatively long, riveted pommel and the two short fullers in the single-edged blade deliver its lively feel. The S-shaped cross guard swings up to form a graceful knuckle bow and a side guard ring keeps the hunter's hand firmly on the grip. The German hunting sabre comes with a leather scabbard.

Just picked this sword up from the post a few days ago and I am such a huge fan! I genuinely don't believe there's a better 16th-17th century hanger/saber out there for under 200€. Construction is really solid with nothing loose in the slightest, tight fit between blade and crossguard, peened pommel, and good fit in scabbard. I had read the specs before I ordered but was still a bit surprised at how long it is when I picked it up! It is a bit heavy (a,2kg right?) without a strong distal taper but that's the Windlass style so it is to be expected, and I really think it's something you have to accept if you want a sword with this quality under 300-400€. The grip was a little bit narrow for me but that was zero problem since I just quickly wrapped it with cloth, which is something I like to do anyway since it allows a personalized fit. The points about the weight and the grip thickness might sound bad, but I really think that their minuteness speak to how otherwise happy I am with the sword :) I'm docking half a star because of it (which is a bit unfair since I think you'll find similar issues on all swords this price and quality), but other than that it's a perfect score from me ?
