Ornate Viking Helmet Sigurd with Dog Motif
A Masterpiece of Nordic Craftsmanship
Structurally, this helmet is based on the so-called "spectacle helmets" typical of the Vendel and Viking eras. Its dominant feature is the distinctive nasal guard connected to the eye arches, giving your face a menacing and unyielding expression. The bowl of the helmet is reinforced with a metal ridge running from the forehead to the nape, and a circumferential band. The entire surface of these metal bands is covered with intricate knotwork ornaments characteristic of Viking art.
The most interesting feature, however, is the hinged cheek plates. They are decorated with an embossed motif resembling a dog or wolf (symbols of loyalty or ferocity) in the typical animal style. The patinated finish gives the helmet the appearance of an ancient artefact that has already weathered many battles.
Usage and Comfort
To ensure the helmet stays firmly on your head and does not wobble even during sudden movements, it is equipped with an adjustable leather liner (suspension) inside. Naturally, it also includes a sturdy chin strap with a buckle to secure the helmet in place. Although the helmet is made of steel, its 1 mm (approx. 19 gauge) thickness makes it primarily suitable for LARP, theatre performances, film, or as a luxury costume accessory.
Important Warning: While the helmet is made of metal, the 1 mm material thickness does not provide sufficient protection against blows from steel weapons. This helmet is not intended for full-contact combat (buhurt, Battle of the Nations) or historical fencing with heavy weapons. There is a risk of denting and injury.
Care Instructions
Like any armour made from mild steel, this helmet requires your care to prevent rust. Wipe it dry after every use. If you are not going to wear it for a long time, preserve the surface with oil (e.g., mineral oil or WD-40). Store it in a dry place. Treat the cheek plates with care – although they are hinged, rough handling could damage the mechanism. For maximum comfort, I recommend wearing a padded arming cap underneath, which increases comfort and fills the space better.
