Viking Gjermundbu Helmet – Patinated 2mm Steel with Leather Liner and Riveted Mail Aventail

Appearance and Construction of the Helmet

This Viking Gjermundbu type helmet is handmade from structural steel approximately 2.0 mm thick, ensuring high durability. The steel surface is treated with a dark patina, giving the helmet an ancient, authentic look while also providing some protection against corrosion. A characteristic feature of the helmet is the "spectacle" face guard (ocular), which protects the eye and nose area, and a reinforcing central ridge on the top of the bowl. For neck and shoulder protection, there is a sturdy riveted mail aventail (camail). The interior of the helmet is lined with a comfortable and secure genuine leather liner, which ensures comfort when worn and helps to absorb impacts. A strong leather chin strap with a brass buckle ensures a secure fit on the head. The helmet is designed for a head circumference of 68 cm (one size fits most).

How You Can Use This Helmet

This fully functional replica of the Viking Gjermundbu helmet is an ideal choice if you:

  • Participate in historical battles and events focused on the Viking Age (reenactment).
  • Are a LARP enthusiast portraying a Norse warrior character.
  • Attend Viking festivals and want to have an authentic period costume.
  • Are expanding your collection of historical armour and militaria.
  • Are looking for an impressive and authentic decoration with a Viking theme.

It will serve you excellently if you are portraying a true Scandinavian Viking, rather than a Varangian/Rus/Eastern Viking, where different types of head protection might have been used.

History and Wearers of the Helmet

The original Gjermundbu helmet was discovered in 1943 in a burial mound near Haugsbygd, Norway. It is dated to the second half of the 10th century, the peak of the Viking Age. This find is extremely valuable as it represents the only almost completely preserved example of a Viking battle helmet found directly in Scandinavia. Other finds are either fragmentary or come from other areas influenced by Vikings. The Gjermundbu helmet provides crucial insight into the protective gear of Norse warriors. The characteristic "spectacle" guard and the simple yet effective design of the bowl were typical for head protection in that period. These helmets were worn by Viking warriors who participated in raids, trade expeditions, and the settlement of new territories.

An Interesting Historical Fact

The Gjermundbu helmet find was part of a rich grave assemblage that, in addition to the helmet, also included a mail shirt, a sword, several axes, spears, and other items. This indicates that a prominent individual was buried there, likely a chieftain or a very wealthy warrior. This comprehensive find has significantly contributed to our understanding of Viking military technology and burial rites.

Care and Storage of the Product

To ensure your Viking Gjermundbu helmet maintains its beauty and functionality for as long as possible, pay attention to the following recommendations:

  • Removing Protective Oil: The helmet is delivered carefully coated with a layer of oil to protect it against corrosion during transport and storage. You can easily remove this oil with a dry cloth or a cloth lightly dampened with an oil remover or mineral spirits.
  • Regular Maintenance: After each use, especially if you have sweated or the helmet has become damp, dry it thoroughly. Wipe the metal parts dry and lightly coat them with a conservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or other gun oil) to prevent rust. Pay attention to the mail aventail as well.
  • Leather Care: Treat the leather liner and chin strap from time to time with a leather care product to keep it supple and prevent cracking.
  • Storage: Store the helmet in a dry and well-ventilated place. Do not expose it unnecessarily to direct moisture. For long-term storage, it is ideal to keep it lightly oiled and possibly stored in a breathable bag.
