The boss is not just a decoration – it is the heart of your shield. It protects the hand holding the grip inside the shield boss cavity, allowing you to use the shield actively to deflect blows and deliver offensive punches.
Hand Protection in Nordic Style
This replica is made of mild steel with a thickness of approx. 2 mm (14 gauge). This thickness provides sufficient strength for most historical fencing activities (reenactment, stage combat). The hemispherical shape provides enough room for your hand, even when wearing a glove, and safely deflects opponent's blades.
The serrated flange (rim) is not merely an aesthetic element; historically, it may have added structural rigidity or helped catch an opponent's blade sliding off the shield face. The boss comes with four pre-drilled holes, making it significantly easier for you to mount it onto your wooden shield board.

Installation and Maintenance
To attach the boss to the shield, use steel rivets (not included), which you should peen over on the inside of the shield. Ensure the hole in the wooden shield board matches the inner diameter of the boss so you have plenty of room for your grip.
Beware of rust! The boss is made of carbon steel and is supplied without a surface finish (unlacquered). You may receive it with a light layer of preservation oil or even with minor traces of surface rust. This is a natural property of this material and enhances the historical look. After every use, and especially if the boss gets wet, wipe it dry and preserve it with oil (e.g., mineral oil or WD-40). This will ensure its longevity.

As this is a hand-finished product, dimensions and material thickness may vary slightly from piece to piece. Small imperfections in the surface are a sign of manual craftsmanship, not a defect.
