Black Leather Sword Half-Scabbard with Integrated Belt
Historical Context and Proper Use
Methods of wearing swords evolved continuously throughout the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, as knightly cavalry became the dominant force on the battlefield, it was essential to have the sword firmly and reliably suspended at the waist so it would not interfere while riding, yet remain instantly accessible. The concept of a half-scabbard (often made solely of leather without a wooden core, or featuring an open back) provided a lightweight and easily accessible option for carrying practice or blunt weapons. This replica is designed for right-handed users, meaning it is worn suspended on the left hip so the sword can be drawn smoothly across the body with the right hand. It includes a long belt with a buckle made of hand-worked mild steel, which you can adjust to fit your body perfectly.
Leather Scabbard Care and Maintenance
High-quality cowhide is a long-lasting material if you provide it with proper care. We recommend treating the entire half-scabbard and belt at least twice a year with a colourless leather balm containing beeswax. The balm nourishes the leather, keeps it supple, and increases its resistance to rain and moisture. If your gear gets wet, never dry it near an open fire, on a hot radiator, or in direct summer sunlight. The leather could harden and crack. Let it air dry naturally at room temperature. Keep in mind that minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural characteristics of leather, giving each piece a unique historical patina.
Safety Warning
This half-scabbard is made entirely of leather and does not contain a rigid wooden core. Therefore, it is intended only for blunt weapons (for historical fencing, LARP, stage combat). Never insert a sword with a sharply honed blade into it! A sharp blade could easily slice through the leather and cause severe or even fatal injury (e.g., by accidentally severing the femoral artery).
Recommended Accessories
To accompany this practical half-scabbard, we highly recommend acquiring a high-quality blunt one-handed sword from the High Middle Ages, ensuring its blade matches the maximum permitted dimensions of this scabbard.
