V-Shaped Leather Sword Frog with Cross Lacing

Historical Context and Proper Usage

Two-point belt suspension systems, often referred to as forked or V-frogs, became highly popular during the High and Late Middle Ages. As swords gradually became longer and heavier, a system was needed to stabilise the weapon. Distributing the weight across two points effectively prevents the belt from uncomfortably twisting or sagging, while keeping the sword hilt at the perfect angle for a rapid draw. This frog is very easy to use: simply thread your belt through the two upper loops (designed as standard for belts up to 4 cm / 1.57 in wide). The laced tunnel at the bottom is used to securely hold your sword's scabbard, or you can insert the blade of a blunt practice weapon directly into it. The product is custom-made according to the provided dimensions of your weapon or scabbard.

Leather Gear Maintenance

High-quality smooth cowhide boasts a long lifespan if you provide it with basic care. We recommend thoroughly treating the entire frog at least twice a year with a colourless leather balm, ideally one containing natural beeswax. The balm keeps the leather supple and increases its resistance to rain and sweat. If your equipment gets wet during an event, under no circumstances should you dry it near an open fire, on a radiator, or in direct sunlight. Rapid drying destroys the leather—it will harden and may crack. Always let it air dry naturally at room temperature. Minor variations in colour and surface texture are natural characteristics of handcrafted leather and do not degrade its quality.

Important Safety Warning

If you choose to carry a sword directly in this frog (i.e., without a rigid wooden scabbard), insert only blunt weapons intended for historical fencing or LARP into the leather tunnel. Never insert a sword with a sharply honed blade! The sharp edge would easily slice through the leather during movement or when drawing the weapon, which could lead to the destruction of the frog and, more importantly, very serious injury to yourself (e.g., in the thigh area).

Recommended Accessories

To create the perfect suspension system, we recommend pairing this frog with a sturdy leather belt up to 4 cm (1.57 in) wide and a high-quality blunt sword (one-handed or bastard sword), whose weight this type of frog can handle with ease.
