Dark Brown Leather Sword Frog with Embossed Floral Motif

Historical Context and Practical Wearing

Similar leather suspensions, often called frogs, represented an effective and widespread method of carrying weapons in the Middle Ages. The construction of this frog utilises a massive leather tunnel through which the belt is simply threaded. The weapon itself (ideally in a scabbard) is then inserted into the prepared slanted slot. This slanted angle is not accidental – it allows the sword to hang naturally and comfortably along the thigh while providing the ideal angle for a lightning-fast and smooth draw of the weapon. When ordering, it is important to provide the exact dimensions of your weapon and state whether you are right- or left-handed, so that the frog is custom-made for you and the drawing angle corresponds to your dominant hand.

Safety Principles and Leather Care

For safety reasons, it is strongly recommended to insert swords equipped with a wooden or leather scabbard into the frog. Inserting a sharp, or even blunt, steel blade without a scabbard directly into the narrow slot in the leather would lead to rapid cutting of the material, destruction of the frog, and pose a risk of serious injury to your leg. To ensure the natural smooth cowhide serves you for many years and retains its strength, we recommend treating it at least twice a year with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in the rain on your expedition, always dry the frog slowly at normal room temperature. Never dry it on a hot radiator, with a hair dryer, or near an open fire – the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.
