Equestrian Statue Richard the Lionheart – Silver Edition – Marto

Craftsmanship and Design

The knight is depicted in a full suit of ceremonial plate armor with intricate relief engravings and a polished silver look. A striking feature is the Great Helm crowned with a dragon crest, symbolizing martial power. The figure is equipped with a round shield, a sword at the hip, and a lance bearing a flag.

The steed is cast from high-quality resin and fitted with matching armor elements. The horse is draped in a genuine red velvet caparison, embroidered with three gold lions—the enduring symbol of the English monarchy established by Richard himself. Interestingly, the banner displays the French *fleur-de-lis*, nodding to Richard's status as a French duke and his extensive continental domains. The entire composition is mounted on a solid, polished wooden base.

Historical Context

Richard I (1157–1199), known as *Coeur de Lion*, was a legendary warrior king and a leader of the Third Crusade. While the style of armor shown here is an artistic representation closer to 16th-century parade armor than the mail worn in the 12th century, the statue captures the romanticized essence of knighthood. The juxtaposition of the English Lions and French Lilies on the textiles reflects the complex history of the Angevin Empire.
