Decorative Sword Colada – El Cid Campeador – Marto Toledo

A Jewel of Toledo Craftsmanship

This replica is based on the historical original preserved in the Royal Palace of Madrid. You might find it interesting that although El Cid lived in the 11th century, the hilt of this sword corresponds to the 16th century. This is because the blade, traditionally identified as El Cid's, was mounted with a new, fashionable hilt during the Renaissance. Marto faithfully captures this historical configuration.

The hilt is cast from Zamak alloy and its surface is finished with silver leaf, giving it a luxurious appearance. The guard features the complex loops and rings typical of the transition period between the medieval arming sword and the rapier. The pommel is spherical, and the grip imitates wire wrapping, ensuring a firm and aesthetic look.

The blade is made of high-quality AISI 440 stainless steel. It is hardened and tempered, but please remember it is designed primarily for display. The blade features an etched inscription stating "YO SOY LA COLADA" (I am Colada). The name "Colada" means a sword made from "acero colado," a process of alloyed steel free from impurities.

The Legend of Colada

According to the epic poem "Cantar de mio Cid," El Cid won Colada in combat from the Count of Barcelona. He later gifted the sword to his loyal knight, Martín Antolínez, who used it to defeat the Infante Diego González in a duel. It is said that in the hands of a brave warrior, the sword would frighten unworthy opponents merely by its presence.

Usage and Safety

Although this sword looks like a formidable weapon, it is strictly a decorative item. The stainless steel blade is brittle under impact, and the hilt construction is not built for actual fencing.

  • Intended Use: Wall decoration, costume accessory for ceremonial purposes, theatre prop.
  • Warning: Never use this sword for fencing or striking objects. Doing so may cause the blade to break and result in injury.
  • Maintenance: To maintain its shine, simply wipe the blade occasionally with a soft cloth. Since it is stainless steel, it requires minimal oiling. Clean the silver-plated hilt only with a dry cloth to avoid damaging the finish.
