High Leather Viking Boots Huscarl with Horn Toggles

Historical Context and Cut Specifics

The term Huscarl (or Housecarl) in Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon England referred to a member of the elite, oath-bound personal guard of kings and powerful nobles (jarls). They were professional soldiers, skilled in fighting with a two-handed axe and sword, forming the hard core of the armies of the time. The ornate and elaborate fastening with horn or bone toggles clearly indicates their higher position within the military hierarchy.

An important specific of this model: the upper part of the boot above the ankle forms a so-called design shaft. Depending on your calf circumference, the two halves of the upper leather may not meet perfectly, and the resulting wedge-shaped gap is not (in accordance with historical finds) backed by a tongue. This is not a defect but a natural characteristic of the period cut. Any gap can be easily filled with suitable woollen leg wraps or thicker socks.

Material, Sole, and Colour Variants

The upper is honestly sewn from high-quality cowhide. The crucial advantage for the modern reenactor is the thick rubber sole. While this represents a slight concession from historical accuracy, it radically increases your safety – unlike smooth leather soles, it significantly reduces the risk of slipping on wet grass, in mud, or on modern surfaces.

The standard leather colours are black, dark brown, and light brown (natural). Other colour shades are achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. Please keep in mind that this covering layer shares the natural properties of patent leathers – due to the stress and bending of the material, small cracks may form over time, or the coating may crumble locally. For the purposes of weekend historical battles and festivals, however, this finish will serve to your full satisfaction.

Adjusting the Lacing, Leather Care, and Custom Fit

If you find the boot too tight or too loose over the instep or shin, you can easily adjust the fastening system. Simply untie the knots on the leather straps securing the horn buttons to the boot (use an awl or a thick nail to help untie a tight knot) and shorten or lengthen the strap accordingly.

From the factory, the leather is treated with a beeswax balm that softens and impregnates it. To maintain a long lifespan, it is necessary to regularly nourish the boots with available waxes, oils, or standard shoe polish, which additionally allows you to easily cover any scuffs acquired in battle. Never dry the footwear near a direct heat source, such as an open fire or a hot radiator, as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.

This model is produced only in a total height of approx. 29 cm (11.4 in). If you wear orthotic insoles and choose the custom-made variant, it is absolutely necessary to send them to us in advance. They will be precisely and functionally built into the footwear, ensuring the boots provide you with the best support.
