High Leather Pirate Boots with Cuff and Back Lacing

Historical Context and Proper Putting On

High boots with a cuff and back lacing are inspired by museum finds dating from the 12th to the 15th century. However, this cut is not only fantastic for portraying the High Gothic period but has also become an iconic element of pirate, cavalier, and musketeer costumes. The lacing on the back of the shaft is highly practical – it allows for flexible size adjustment depending on whether you are wearing thin hose or thicker trousers. When putting them on, however, you must be very careful: never pull the boot up by the decorative cuff! The seam could burst, or the cuff itself could tear. Always pull the boot on by grasping the sturdy main shaft.

Cut Options and Boot Height

By default, this footwear is manufactured with a practical rounded toe. However, if you are building a strictly Gothic costume, a distinctly pointed version, where the tip curves back towards the instep, can also be made upon request (and for a surcharge). The basic and most common height of the boot is 35 cm (13.8 in). When opting for custom sizing, we do not recommend exceeding a height of 5 cm (2 in) below your kneecap so the boot does not restrict your movement. The maximum height of the leather is around 48 cm (18.9 in).

The leather is supplied in black, dark brown, and light brown (natural) colours. Other shades are achieved by applying a special topcoat dye. With this dye, the natural risk of cracking or crumbling in the flex zones of the foot must be expected (it behaves similarly to patent leather). For occasional wear at events, however, this finish will serve excellently.

Material, Sole, and Regular Maintenance

The boots are carefully sewn from high-quality cowhide and are factory-treated with a beeswax balm. This balm adds softness, impregnation, and a slightly darker patina to the leather. For a long lifespan and moisture resistance, regularly nourish the leather with waxes, oils, or standard shoe polish, which also easily covers minor scuffs acquired in battle. Never dry the footwear near a direct heat source (open fire, hot radiator), as the leather would irreversibly harden and crack.

The sole is made of durable modern rubber with a heel. This feature significantly increases your safety on wet grass, in mud, and on modern smooth surfaces. If you choose custom-made footwear and wear orthotic insoles, it is absolutely necessary to send them to us in advance so we can fit them precisely and functionally into the boot.
