The shashka originated among the mountain tribes of the Caucasus in the 12th century. The Russian word shashka comes from the Adyghe word Adyghe, which means "long knife". Most of the Russian and Ukrainian Cossacks adopted this sabre-like weapon. It gradually replaced the sabre in all cavalry units except hussars during the 19th century. Russian Shasqua

The Shasqua was first known as a Cossack weapon used on horseback and then became the official officer’s sword of the Soviet Union. The Russian Shasqua features an unsharpened carbon steel blade, carved hardwood grip, and brass guard and pommel. The Pommel features the star, sickle and hammer of the Soviet Union. Includes a wood scabbard with black leather wrap and brass accents.
